A look at Frans Verhoeven's nursery
At the end of August, Juul de Mooij visited grower Frans Verhoeven, who has been growing dried flowers since last year. Frans works with Dutch Masters In Dried Flowers and shares his passion for the trade. He enthusiastically says: "We grow Amaranthus and Phalaris, among others. At the end of 2019, I sowed these crops, and after a wonderful summer, I harvested these beautiful flowers at the end of August."
Natural drying techniques in the greenhouse
Frans further explains: "After harvesting, I started drying the flowers in the greenhouse. Drying was somewhat improvised, as we didn't have any special drying capacity. The warm weather in September allowed the flowers to dry naturally in the greenhouse. Despite the warm conditions, it still took two weeks for the flowers to dry completely. I had covered the greenhouse to prevent the sun from affecting the colours."

Frans grows two species of Amaranthus: the green, hanging Amaranthus Caudatus and the red Amaranthus. Both species are extremely popular. Frans explains: "The flowers are mostly used in bouquets. The hanging Amaranthus is also often placed or hung on bowls. The demand for these flowers is high. Wholesalers and florists appreciate the quality of our flowers."
The harvesting and drying process
Frans talks about the harvesting and drying process: "Harvesting the flowers was an intensive job. Despite the improvisation, drying in the greenhouse went smoothly. The flowers retained their beautiful colour and shape."
Frans is proud of his work: "This season's dried flowers are beautiful. They are ready for sale and will adorn many bouquets. Our customers appreciate the quality and craftsmanship. We look forward to the next harvest."
