Vicini, based in Nootdorp, entered a collaboration with Arend Roses, a renowned rose nursery, last year. Today, Vicini grows hydrangeas in a former rose nursery. This unique partnership blends expertise from both worlds. Starting January 2024, Hortensia Nursery Vicini will operate at two locations in Maasland, with greenhouses of 8 and 3 hectares. Their passion for ornamental cultivation is reflected in their methods and flower offerings.

seasonal beauty at vicini
The hydrangea season at Vicini runs from April to December. During these months, Vicini harvests hydrangeas two to three times per week from specific greenhouses. Florists and business clients eagerly anticipate the availability of these exclusive flowers each year. In consultation with breeders, they determine the names of their hydrangeas. The Verena, one of their key varieties, is grown and processed in large quantities.
the secret behind colorful hydrangeas
Vicini uses an advanced drip irrigation system that provides each hydrangea plant with water and nutrients. Each plant receives 50 cc of water per hour through two tubes. A computer-controlled system adjusts the frequency based on temperature. The second line contains water mixed with metal, which changes the flower’s color. For example, aluminum turns pink hydrangeas blue and red ones purple.

pruning for healthy hydrangeas
Hydrangeas bloom only once per year. After flowering, maintenance remains essential. Regular pruning of branches promotes healthy growth. Thin branches are removed to strengthen the plants. This care ensures each plant maintains around 15 branches, resulting in stronger, healthier growth.

During periods of low prices and excess flowers, Vicini allows hydrangeas to mature further, becoming "classic hydrangeas" with unique colors like champagne. These matured flowers possess a distinctive and attractive appearance and find their way to the market despite lower prices.
