How pruning affects growth and flowering

Cherry blossom adds an instant spring feel to your interiors. These white branches are not only beautiful, but also ecologically responsible. By pruning the cherry tree, it gets more sun, which promotes cherry production. Grower Piet shares his insights on how pruning affects the growth and flowering of these beautiful branches.

Pruning to grow
"Cherry blossom is actually a by-product of pruning. This means that the tree is pruned mainly for fruit production. To ensure that the tree grows and produces delicious cherries every year, it is pruned into a specific shape every year. The first year, the tree grows mainly in length and does not yet bear fruit.
The cherry blossom branches bloom every year, but do not bear fruit every year. Fruits appear only on two-year-old wood. When pruning, you need to cut away the annual branches to keep the biennial branches for fruit. As soon as this becomes necessary, I go to the orchard to prune."

Living with nature
"Pruning is always done between mid-December and Easter. The weather plays a crucial role here. The growth of the bud depends on the temperature. When it is freezing and snowing in December, the bud grows slower than when it is milder weather with temperatures of eighteen degrees in March. We depend on nature. After Easter, the pruning season is over and the tree is given room to grow. This allows the buds to flower and the fruits to develop. For the cross-pollination of the blossom, there are bee greenhouses and bumblebee greenhouses next door."

Pre-drawn flowers
"After pruning, the cherry blossom is 'pre-drawn'. This is a heat process. After pruning, we make bundles of the branches. We put these on water in high humidity, which creates a bud in the branch. If the blossoms are pruned before 21 December - the shortest day of the year - the flowering process comes to a halt and the bud grows slowly. The closer the pruning is to 21 December, the easier it becomes to pull in a bud. From mid-December to mid-January, it takes 10 days to pull in a bud. From mid-January to mid-February, it takes five days and then it takes only three days. This regulates nature and it remains special to see!"
