On a crisp morning in late March, we’re at Theo Dobbe’s tulip farm in Vogelenzang, North Holland, with our buyers. Theo, who is over 80, welcomes us with his arms full of freshly picked, exclusive tulips. Although it’s still early in the tulip season, the fields are slowly beginning to fill with the first varieties. Theo Dobbe's nursery, which he runs together with his son Patrick, spans one hectare and features 100 varieties of exclusive tulips. From Mount Tacoma to Daladier, Pretty Lady, White King, and many more. Each year, the nursery produces half a million tulip stems. Theo tells us they grow many old tulip varieties that are no longer found elsewhere. Tall tulips, short tulips, double tulips, and fringed tulips—all are present. With more than 60 years of experience in floriculture, Theo knows the characteristics of each variety like no one else.Â

"Every tulip needs its own care," Theo explains. Some tulips need to be picked early, while others require more time to mature. Luckily, his loyal team of four experienced seasonal workers from Poland knows the craft well. Every year, Theo and his son carefully select the strongest tulip varieties for the next season. They pay close attention to floriculture trends and the demand from florists and wholesalers. This makes their product range unique and of high quality.
theo's top selection: a favorite highlighted
Each year, Theo and Patrick evaluate the performance of their tulips. Some do well in the greenhouse but don't adapt as well in the field. Only the strongest and most beautiful varieties are grown again. Theo's personal favorite? The Estella Rijnveld, a gracefully flamed parrot tulip. "Really an incredibly beautiful thing!" he says with a smile.Â
