At Kwekerij Van der Wilt, you’ll find a true rainbow of mini gerberas and germinis, all grown on Dutch soil. As soon as we step into the 3-hectare greenhouse, we are surrounded by a sea of vibrant flowers. Everywhere you look, employees are walking around with arms full of colorful gerberas. Yellow, orange, red, purple, and various shades of pink, cream, and white – it feels like a candy store filled with floral beauty!
the history of grower van der wilt
Almost 50 years ago, Aad van der Wilt founded this beautiful nursery in Mijdrecht. Today, his daughter Tessa leads the family business with the same passion and care. Tessa takes us on a tour of the nursery and enthusiastically shares about the various types of gerberas, the breeding process, and the unique names of the flowers. In addition to sales, Tessa is also responsible for administration, marketing, and even cart building, a diverse role she fulfills with love.

For Tessa, the perfect gerbera is a plant that not only has high production but also boasts vibrant color, strong stems, and easy-to-pick flowers. "It needs to stand well in a vase," she says. The search for the perfect gerbera plant involves testing, improving, and more testing. Her brother Joris has been passionately dedicated to this breeding process for 10 years. The nursery even has a special nursery room where hundreds of new gerbera plants sprout right before your eyes, a sight you won’t soon forget!

Did you know that Kwekerij Van der Wilt has no less than 185,000 gerbera plants? A gerbera plant lasts about 3 years and produces an average of 16 to 22 flowers per square meter per week. This means that around 115,000 stems are harvested daily, each with a length of 50 cm. All this beauty grows under the glow of 2000 lamps, which provide the perfect conditions.
