From start-up to flourishing business
Nursery Bloeiers in Slootdorp covers 9500 square metres and offers an impressive range of summer annual flowers, herbs, perennials, and hanging pots. What started as a small project in 1998 in Brabant, has grown into a thriving business. Afke Schrale, the founder, quickly expanded her range to include poppies and sunflowers, always in step with the latest flower and plant trends.

The discovery of ornamental fruits
Afke discovered ornamental fruits through a magazine and immediately became fascinated. After searching for seeds, helped by a Belgian collector, she introduced her first crop to florists and retailers, who responded enthusiastically. In 2002, she moved to Slootdorp and expanded her nursery with four greenhouses on her parents' land. Now she leads a passionate team that works together for their success.
Metamorphosis of the greenhouses
After the summer flowering season, the greenhouses of Bloeiers undergo a metamorphosis every year. From mid-June, they are greenhouses filled with decorative vegetables and climbing plants that produce unusual ornamental fruits. ‘We guide the climbing plants up with wires so they get optimal light and no sand gets to them,’ Afke explains.
At Bloomers, the plants grow slowly, there is little firing and plants are manually watered when needed. ‘This way, we can continuously monitor the quality of our plants and adjust if necessary,’ says Afke. ‘We limit the use of plant protection products by scouting a lot and opting for biological solutions. Plant residues are fermented and serve as nutrients for our arable farm.’
Ornamental fruit lovers
The ornamental fruits are largely related to the cucumber. They are very popular with florists for floral arrangements and decoration. Chefs in the region are also showing increasing interest in the fruits of Bloomers.
From July to November, they offer months of decorative value. What was picked yesterday is already at Greenflor today. ‘We are one of the few flower wholesale suppliers in the Netherlands with these unique ornamental fruits. Put them on a tray and enjoy them for months,’ Afke said.
