Recently, I visited the Van Elderen family in Lijnden. After moving to this region, the family devoted themselves to growing summer flowers. Son Reinier turned out to be a real pioneer, always looking for new, unique varieties. However, the Sandersonia immediately enchanted him. This exclusive flower, with its beauty and charm, has had a prominent place in their flower range ever since.
ode to beauty
The Sandersonia is nothing short of breathtaking. Its long, slender stems bear flowers that resemble twinkling lights. Its warm orange petals radiate instant warmth, while its green leaves bring tranquillity and balance. Recently, the Van Elderen family brought a breakthrough to their breeding programme: a new Sandersonia variety. These flowers stand upright, unlike the traditional hanging Sandersonia flowers, enriching our range of exclusive flowers.
challenges and success with sandersonia
Despite conflicting advice, Reinier decided to grow Sandersonia as a cut flower. The tubers require special overwintering conditions. After much experimentation, he optimised the quality. Where the stems initially reached 60 cm, they now grow up to 100 cm thanks to the right nutrition and climate. Reinier's motto sums it up: ‘This plant follows no rules except irregularity.’

Reinier saw every unknown variety as a challenge. Together with his wife Irma, he was the first to bring blue lathyrus to the auction. However, the Sandersonia enchanted them permanently. Their son Dirk developed a special planting machine to keep the soil airy, creating perfect planting conditions. However, planting the fragile tubers remains precision work.
The family manages the entire growing cycle themselves: from sowing Sandersonia to harvesting tiny tubers. After two years, these produce beautiful, cutable flowers for our dried flower wholesale business and more.
