A young couple, Arnold and Annelies Glasbergen, decided to go on an adventure in the French countryside. Their mission? Running a beautiful hydrangea nursery in Brittany. During a quad safari through an impressive field of pink, blue and lilac hydrangeas, they show us the magic of their work. This nursery is an important part of Greenflor's exclusive flower offering.

Jardin Hortence was founded in 1994 and for many years did thriving business with Greenflor, a leading flower wholesaler. When the work became too hard for the growers, Greenflor took over to continue the partnership. Thus, Greenflor not only became the supplier of beautiful hydrangeas, but also the proud owner of this Breton gem.

Jardin Hortence focuses on four powerful varieties of hydrangeas: Bodensee, Crimson, Amethyst and Charlotte. Bodensee, an ancient variety, is a unique product rarely found elsewhere. The old plants were selected for their adaptation to the Breton sea climate. Grower Annelies notes that climate change is becoming increasingly visible, which calls for continuous innovation within cultivation.

During our tour of the fields, we see how Jardin Hortence is constantly investing in innovation. Different varieties of hydrangeas are tested for growth, colour and weather resistance. Old, weakened plants are replaced by young, vigorous specimens to ensure the highest quality. This innovation comes not only by necessity, but also by inspiration from vintners looking for more weather-resistant crops.

Arnold and Annelies have developed into true hydrangea experts. They know exactly how to prune for larger flowers, sometimes up to 30 centimetres in diameter. Each variety requires a different approach, and through years of experience they know exactly what their plants need. ‘It's a process of trying, learning and improving,’ says Annelies.

With a clear vision, Arnold and Annelies are building the future of the nursery. Planting a new hydrangea field quickly costs € 30.000, so this requires a carefully thought-out plan. The plants they plant now will still be thriving in 20-30 years' time, supplying their exclusive flowers to flower wholesalers.
