Bright matthiola incana from Naples
Annielo and Rosanna Batello, along with their family, run the Flor Trade flower company in Pompeii. Three times a week, a truck transports a variety of flowers, including anemones, ranunculus, matthiola incana and chrysanthemums, to Greenflor. This regular delivery ensures a varied and attractive range of flowers at Greenflor.
From bulb trade to flower empire
Annielo's father was a well-known bulb trader in Italy. Annielo extended this tradition by developing a flower business serving Europe and America. He now focuses on growing violets. "I plant the matthiola incanaat the end of August," Annielo explains. "They grow into sturdy stems, after which we can harvest from mid-December. By planting continuously, we ensure that we have a constant supply until mid-April."
The popularity of matthiola incana
Matthiola incana are currently very popular for their rich colours and lovely fragrance. Annielo says: "These flowers fit the trend of field bouquets perfectly. They are large, colourful and have a pleasant fragrance." The flowers benefit from the fertile soil in southern Italy, enriched by the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius. The greenhouse provides extra protection from the elements and keeps night temperatures stable.
