At Van Schie Nursery in Nieuw Vennep, everything revolves around sustainable cultivation. Grower Ton van Schie is dedicated to eco-friendly practices, with a roof full of solar panels, a heat pump, and an electric car for transport to the auction. The pampas grass, sometimes reaching two meters in height, sways gracefully in the wind as we visit his nursery.

Sustainability is central to everything Ton undertakes. He represents farmers from West Netherlands in the Regional Energy Strategy. Together with agricultural entrepreneurs and policymakers, he works on the future of the sector, focusing on sustainable energy production and its environmental impact.
His own nursery is a prime example of sustainability. Ton has deliberately chosen pampas grass, a crop that is hardly susceptible to pests and requires almost no pesticides. His philosophy is simple: let nature do its work. Forcing seasons with artificial methods does not produce better quality. He offers a high-quality flower assortment that is naturally and sustainably grown.

Ton's agricultural background began with his father, who was a dairy farmer. Pampas cultivation started about 30 years ago, by chance, when a plant grew on a manure pile. Since then, Ton has developed a passion for growing and perfecting pampas grass. Today, he sells both fresh and dried cortaderia, either natural or dyed. After years of research, he found an environmentally friendly dye to color the pampas in the most beautiful trend colors.
With an annual sale of approximately 500,000 cortaderia stems, the harvest peak occurs in September and October. About 50% of the fresh, dyed pampas goes to flower wholesaler Greenflor. From there, they spread via cash & carry or online flower wholesaler channels to florists, garden centers, and wholesalers worldwide. In this way, exclusive flowers like the beautiful pampas grass find their way to customers around the globe.
