mimosa | tradition & symbolism

During International Women's Day, mimosa is traditionally given as a symbol of appreciation and solidarity. This tradition originated in Italy, where mimosa was chosen for its early bloom, soft appearance and strong character. The flower represents resilience, solidarity and attention, making it a powerful and recognisable gesture to honour women worldwide.

tips & tricks

for working with mimosa

Cut the stems at an angle and place the mimosa immediately in clean, preferably lukewarm water so that the flower can absorb the water well and stay fresh.

Ensure that mimosa is not placed in a room that is too cold or draughty, as the flower is sensitive to drying out and temperature changes.

Use mimosa as a light and refined accent in arrangements and combine it with calm structures and soft colours to enhance its natural look.

For creative applications, mimosa can also be dried, which preserves its shape and warm yellow colour and extends its lifespan.

a unique origin of mimosa

Mimosa originates from a special growing area on the Côte d'Azur. Approximately 95 percent of global mimosa production comes from the region between Nice and San Remo, where places such as Pégomas and Mandelieu la Napoule are known as real mimosa hotspots and form the backdrop for the annual Fête du Mimosa.

Together with Greenflor buyer and sourcing expert Marc van Graas, we visited grower Jean Pierre Reynaud of JPR Productions. What once started as a small-scale nursery has grown into the largest mimosa nursery in France and today forms an important part of Greenflor's exclusive mimosa range.

where innovation and craftsmanship come together

J.P.R. Productions is a family business with over a hundred years of experience in mimosa cultivation. Through smart innovations such as packaging on water instead of in boxes and working with customised orders, the company has developed into a true pioneer within the sector. At the same time, craftsmanship remains central, as the mimosa is still cut by hand. The rich history of the family business even comes to life in its own museum, where the scent and story of mimosa are celebrated with perfumes and candles, among other things.
