Wax apples, wax pears, wax malus apples and other waxed ornamental fruit. About 25 years ago, Wiljo van den Berg started out in business in the Betuwe – the heart of Dutch horticulture. In a large pan on the stove, he melted Hema candles. The first waxed pear was born!

The beginning of waxed ornamental fruit

With a crate on the front of his bicycle, he sold the wax pears in cities like Den Bosch and Geldermalsen (NL), with great success. Via via, he came into contact with (former) Greenflor owner Cees de Mooij, who responded enthusiastically to his creation. The demand for all kinds of waxed ornamental fruit – from apple to pear and later even bulbs – was born.

Success with wax bulbs

Wiljo’s collaboration with Edwin van Steijn of flower bulb nursery Van Steijn – Damen came about in 2017, as the demand for wax bulbs grew. Together, the grower and craftsman designed machines for separating the bulb, potting soil and roots. This provides both parties with a lot of financial and environmental benefits.

Today, the golden duo produces about a million wax bulbs a year, with the focus of trade being in the fall and around Christmas. The men proudly show us the very best wax hyacinths of next season.

Custom wax balls

From a large pan in the kitchen, Wiljo’s Product has grown into a professional, largely automated organization. Still, waxing remains largely handwork, which involves a lot of love and passion. Together with his team, he makes the most beautiful creations. All colors of the rainbow, prints, motifs, glitter and snowy. Always according to the latest trends of the season and the latest possibilities. Wax balls are a real showpiece during the holidays!

The entire wax assortment of Wiljo’s Product is available at Greenflor Aalsmeer & Rijnsburg.

New: hyacinth wax balls with waterpin

A 2.5 cm water pin is inserted by hand into the bottom of the bulb. The material absorbs water, giving the bulb the nutrients it needs. As a result, the flower will bloom longer and stronger!
